Confused about the name change? We were founded in 2001 has yourimage2canvas and have successfully traded for near on 8 years. After much discussion we decided to change the name to a much more commercial one, this is when yourimage2canvas formally changed its name to ultra-print ltd. The reason we haven’t changed are domain name is that we have used this for 7 years so are quite dominant with in the search engines so a sudden change in domain to ultra-print could have a drastic effect on our rankings and make it hard for customers to find us. We do own the domain www.ulta-print.co.uk with a redirect to yourimage2canvas. In time we may decide to cease using the yourimage2canvas site and concentrate on the new one. We are planning on expanding our products but this will not be done until we are certain that we have a superior product which means going back to the source and finding out all the best materials that can be used and find some good suppliers that can keep control over quality and keep up with demand., We are planning on bespoke wallpaper, something we tried before on print2wallpaper.co.uk but we now want it all on the same domain. We are also planning on expanding into acrylic and over ways to display your images. This is something we could not do under yourimage2canvas hence the ultra-print name change. This is a name that is associated with all kinds of printing techniques rather than just canvas prints. We are very proud of our canvas prints and hopefully the new range of pictures that we are planning will be of the same high quality! Here at Ultra-Print we have made our ordering process extremely easy so that anyone can use us to order. The order process has various steps that you work through so you only have to focus on one section at a time and also we have an image where you can view what your canvas will look like and then put it into a virtual room to see how it will look in your home.

First of all you start with by uploading your image or selecting one from the online gallery. After the upload you follow the steps that guide you through a selection of choices starting with the canvas size as at this point you can choose various size including landscape, portrait, custom sizes and also 3 and 4 way splits. Then the next steps moves onto frame depth as you have a choice of either a one inch or two inch depth. After that you choose the frame bleed which is whether the image stays on the front of the canvas only or whether the image continues onto the edges of the canvas. Finally just before purchasing you can choose a colour style, here you can choose to have the image just as it is in full colour or either black and white or sepia.

Ultra print has a new site coming very soon. The new site will make ordering canvas prints so much easier. It’s a very simple and modern design with a new flash upload system that will allow users to view there canvas print in multiple rooms. We have talked to many existing customers and asked what will make the site better. The opinion was overwhelming to make the site easier to use with straight to the point paragraphs, less text, more images of previous work and the feature to enable customers to log in. We are also looking to take payments though HSBC, a much better known company than nochex. The people we talked to love the canvas prints we produce but said that the web site needed to be more modern, so we designed a new site with all the opinions on board. The new site is due to launch early November ready for Christmas, We have already made a great start to the project but as always we have had a few problems with parts of the code. The November deadline is getting close and hopefully will be ready but we never know what problems lay ahead of us with such a challenging project. Check back soon to see what we have come up with.

Yourimage2canvas have listed some simple rules below that will help you make your decision about the image quality. Alternatively, you can just email us and we will give you an instant response.

Files that have more pixel data in them will generally give you better resulting canvas prints, especially if the prints are going to be done at larger scales.

Some common terminology is explained below.

Dots per Square Inch Dpi.

Dots per inch or Dpi tells you know how much information is contained within every square inch of your image. This is also referred to as resolution. The resolution on a computer monitor screen is 72Dpi. Lots of digital camera's take photos at 72dpi, but the physical size of the image is generally quite large.

File Type

The 2 most common file types that are used in the graphics industry are Jpeg and Tiff. I will not bore you with what these stand for, but on another note, at Yourimage2canvas we can accept ANY file format that you have.

In general, for smaller sized canvas prints from yourimage2canvas, the file size needs to be around 500kb. For larger canvas prints, the file size needs to be 1mb and over. Obviously the level of compression you apply to the file when saving it will affect the size, so if you are in any doubt on what size canvas print you can have, please let Yourimage2canvas know and we will advise you.

Giclee (said Gee’ clay) is the French word meaning to spray or to squirt, which is how an inkjet printer puts the ink onto the canvas. It is not the same as a standard desktop inkjet printer that you would find in the home, and is much wider, often referred to as large format inkjet printing. Giclee prints and canvas prints can be over a metre wide and can usually print for as long as your roll of canvas is. A special piece of software known as a RIP is required to print in such long lengths. Do giclee prints use ordinary printer’s inks? No. They use special light-fast pigment based inks, which, if kept out of the sun, will remain true for up to 75 years. The way the image is scanned is different also. Gamut mapping
Since different devices don’t have the same colour gamut or colour space, they need some rearrangement near the edges of the colour spectrum. Some colours need to be shifted to the inside or downwards of the gamut as they otherwise cannot be represented on the output device and would simply be clipped. For instance to print a mostly saturated blue from a monitor to canvas with a typical 4 colour printer is a sure to fail. The canvas blue will not be that saturated. Also, the intense cyan of an inkjet printer cannot be easily displayed on a CRT monitor or flat screen. Colour management is the art of predicting and knowing how colours will behave on a printer after you have viewed them on your monitor. At Yourimage2canvas, we come across this all the time as we have a third element involved, you the customer. You want your canvas prints to look exactly the way they do on the monitor in the study at 2am on a dark Monday morning.
Rendering intent
When the gamut of monitors colour space exceeds that of the printer’s, the more saturated colours are likely to become clipped and will not be printed properly. The colour management module can deal with this problem in several ways. The ICC specification has four different ways of rendering colour: absolute colorimetric, relative colorimetric, perceptual, and saturation.
Absolute colorimetric
Absolute colorimetry and relative colorimetry actually use the same table but differ in the adjustment for the white point media. If my output device had a much larger gamut than the source data that (i.e. all the colours in the can be represented data), using the absolute colorimetry rendering intent would “ideally” (ignoring noise, precision etc) give an exact output of the specified CIELAB values. It might not look right, but an instrument making measurements on the print would indicate that it was correct. Absolute colorimetry is useful to get an exact specified colour (e.g. IBM blue). It could also be to quantify the accuracy of mapping methods. The colours outside of the proof print system’s possible colour are mapped to the boundary of the colour gamut.
Relative colorimetric
The goal in relative colorimetry is to be truthful to the specified colour, with only a correction for the media. Relative colorimetry is useful in proofing applications, since you are using it to get an idea of how a print on one device will appear on a different device. Media differences are the only thing you really would like to adjust for. Obviously there has to be some gamut mapping going on also. Usually this is done in a way where hue and lightness are maintained at the cost of reduced saturation. Relative colorimetric is the default rendering intent on most systems.
Perceptual and Saturation
The perceptual and saturation intents are where the results really depend upon the profile maker. This is even how some of the competitors in this market differentiate themselves. These intents should be created by the profile maker so that pleasing images occur with the perceptual intent while eye-catching business graphics occur with the saturation intent. This is achieved through the use of different perceptual remaps of the data as well as different gamut mapping methods.
All of this may seem a little technical but I just wanted to highlight some of the challenges we face every day at Yourimage2canvas when we are making your canvas prints. Should RGB or CMYK colour space be used for canvas prints?...

Many people ask us this question and it is our recommendation to work and save your files in RGB colour space. The reason for using RGB as opposed to CMYK for editing images is because it has a wider colour gamut. If you edit images in CMYK you may be constraining the amount of colours you can use simply by having the default settings applied in Photoshop. When you work and edit images in RGB, they need converting to CMYK for printing your canvas prints. This is best left to us as we use a very complex RIP to do the conversion. What is a RIP? Simply put, it is a piece of software or hardware that converts RGB colour data into a language that is readable by the printer. It also applies pre defined colour parameters to the canvas print prior to printing so that there are no surprises when the canvas is complete.

Computer monitor screens emit colour in RGB colour space (red, green, blue) light. Although all colours of the visible colour spectrum can be produced by mixing red, green and blue, computer monitors are capable of showing only a limited colour gamut. Colour gamut is the visible spectrum.

Where monitors emit light, printed paper absorbs or reflects specific wavelengths of light. Cyan, magenta, yellow inks act as filters, subtracting varying degrees of red, green and blue from white light to produce a selective gamut of spectral colour. Like monitors, printing inks also produce a colour gamut that is only a subset of the visible spectrum, although the range is not the same for both. Consequently, the same art displayed on a computer monitor may not match to that printed in a publication. Also, because printing processes such as offset lithography use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) inks, digital art must be converted to CMYK colour for print. Many printers now prefer digital art files be supplied in the RGB colour space with ICC profiles attached. Images can then be converted to the CMYK colour space by the printer using colour management methods that honour profiles if present; this helps preserve the best possible detail and vibrancy.

Refer to the Instructions for Authors for your journal to determine if files should be supplied as RGB or CMYK. Some printers may prefer your files be delivered in RGB with ICC profiles attached, as this allows the printer to use colour management methods when converting to CMYK. Other printers may prefer your files in the CMYK (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black) mode, as this is the mode required for the printing process. If an RGB (Red/Green/Blue) file is submitted, it must be converted to CMYK for print. When the conversion takes place, colour shifts can occur and TSG will do our best to reproduce as close of a match to your printed output as possible.

It can sometimes be difficult to visualize the reason for colour shift in colour space conversion. The best way to see the colour differences between the CMYK and RGB colour spaces is to look at a colour gamut comparison chart. The chart to the left plots the visible colour spectrum as the large “horse shoe” area, and within this is a plot of the CMYK colours, and the RGB colours. You can see that in some areas the RGB colour space is “outside” that of the CMYK space. It is these colours that will be affected by a conversion from RGB to CMYK

Most desktop scanners, digital cameras, and video capture systems save files as RGB and the conversion of RGB files to CMYK can be done in many ways. RGB converts to only CMY directly. However, when printing, we must add black ink and in doing so must cut back on some colour. The Under colour Removal (UCR) setup will help control this ratio so that a maximum ink density for the four colours will be 280-300% when printing on a coated paper printing stock.
